About

Once you've used a few skills, building your own is the obvious next step, and the thing people get stuck on is usually working out which of their tasks are even worth it. The good candidates tend to be the things you do over and over where you've got a firm opinion on how they should go.

Building it is the easy part. Claude and ChatGPT both have skill creators that do most of the work, so rather than reading a spec and guessing, you talk it through the process you want and it writes the skill for you.

In this session, I'll show you how to spot which of your tasks are worth turning into a skill, then demo the process of using the skill creator to build a skill.

You'll leave able to build your own skills from scratch and knowing which jobs are worth it and which to leave to the model.

This is for you if:

  • You've used a skill or two and now want to build your own
  • You're not sure which of your tasks would actually make a good skill
  • You assumed making one meant writing code or fiddling with files

Before we get started, take a minute and think about this for yourself:

  • What's a job you'd hand off completely if you could trust it to be done your way?
  • Which step in it is really your opinion rather than something the model could work out alone?

Answer those two and you've found your first skill already.
